Fat Loss

Health and Wellness - weight loss

If you have a fat belly, you must lose belly fat before you get in serious trouble with your health. As we have said before, people who tend to store fat in their bellies are at a much higher risk for heart attacks and stroke. If there is a family history of these diseases, you must act quickly for the sake of your own health. Everyone’s body reacts differently to overeating. Some people have lots of back fat, some people have large bellies, and some people put it all on their thighs and rear ends.

Unfortunately for your cardiovascular health, if you don’t lose the belly fat, you will be in serious trouble someday. We don’t want that to happen, so losing weight is a priority. I have some good news for you. If your body tends to store fat in one area, when you start losing weight, that area will start to lose it first. So, you can lose the belly fat by simply dieting with your favorite diet plan. Remember, spot reduction is a myth and your fat will stay on your belly no matter how many sit-ups you do, especially if you don’t put that bag of chips down!

While you are dieting, there are some things you can do to minimize that fat stomach look. You can get a compression garment which will provide support for your back and stomach. Some people report that their midsection would stay smaller looking for a while even after removing the compression garment. Another thing you can do is exercises to strengthen your abdominal muscles which will pull your stomach in. Remember, weight training which builds abdominal muscle is to be avoided because building muscle under fat only makes you look fatter.

So to recap, here’s what we learned. Start a sensible diet to lose belly fat and get slimmer and healthier overall. Wear a compression garment to make you look slimmer and keep you motivated. Strengthen your abdominal muscles to pull that gut in and look slimmer. Over time, you will find that losing weight wasn’t as hard as you thought it would be. Your heart will thank you for the effort.

Weight Loss

Health and Wellness - weight loss

One of the more frustrating aspects of weight loss diets is the great chance of weight return and perhaps a few more pounds on top, after stopping the diet program.

Most people think a diet that can work for their body type has to be as complicated to figure out as rocket science. It truly is not that difficult, but with the many choices and types of diets out there, it’s no wonder that most people fail to get the results they are looking for.

When you look at the different weight loss diets, there are many programs and combinations of programs to choose from. The three main nutrients, proteins, fats and carbohydrates can be broken down to different ratios for total daily calorie intake. For example, you can have high, medium, low and zero calorie amounts of fats, proteins or carbohydrates. The calorie ratios of each nutrient set against the others are numerous. This is where a diet “guru” can come up with his or her own program, advertise it as the best and further confuse the general public with yet another choice.

It doesn’t have to be this way if we look at the real key to this diet program conundrum. There are some general guidelines to follow when you are shopping for a weight loss diet that will allow you to decide if a particular one is right for you. These guidelines can be found in virtually every diet manual.

The aim here isn’t an explanation of what diet you should actually follow, but to give you a logical approach as to how to succeed with whatever program you decide to do. Apply some common sense to a nutritional plan and you will make your weight loss permanent and lifelong.

If we can understand why diets fail in the long term, then we can try to prevent them from failing over and over again. Basically, weight loss goals for most people don’t succeed because of the lack of long-term commitment. Most people already know that they need to expend more calories than they are taking in. No real rocket science here. Unfortunately most are not willing to do what it takes to achieve this calories deficient ratio for longer than a few months or less.

Generally all diets work. It can be high fat, low fat, high carbohydrates and the many combinations of fad diets we see so often. In the short term, by burning more calories than you consume there will be some weight loss, but we need to find the real key that will give us permanent weight loss.

Recent studies have shown that when the popular commercial diets were compared to each other over a 6-month to one-year span of time, they generally had the same weight loss results. The conclusion of one major study sited that the adherence level rather than the diet itself was the primary predictor of whether the weight loss program would work.

The bottom line is that even though some diets are healthier than others, or suppress the appetite better, virtually all diets work the same in the short term. What is clear is adhering to the diet becomes the most important thing when looking at weight loss for the long term.

Lifestyle alteration is the basis here and any thoughts of having permanent weight loss need to be addressed as life long management in order to succeed.

Although most people are looking for the magic bullet to end their weight loss woes, there hasn’t been any real advancement in trying to lose weight without drugs or surgery. People for hundreds of years have known about cutting calories as the method for getting leaner. So the guide to permanent weight loss is to reduce your calories and do your diet program for the long term. That is the real secret. Save your money looking for the next best thing and do what has been proven to work for every one throughout the ages.

Inflammation Can Be a Good Sign

New DocumentInflammation Can Be a Good Sign

Have you ever wondered why inflammation can be a good sign and yet be so dangerous.

Inflammation is your immune system’s response to damage. This damage can arise from trauma, stress, genetic abnormalities, metabolic disorders and a host of other sources including bacterial, viral or parasitic infection. Certain lifestyle choices can also contribute to inflammation: poor diet, stress, overweight, a sedentary lifestyle and smoking. Inflammation can cause redness, swelling, heat, pain and loss of function.

Perhaps while cutting vegetables the knife slips and cuts your hand. The inflammatory response immediately moves into action. White blood cells rush to the scene of the damage and begin to destroy the damaged cells, while sending out chemical signals that call for more help. That’s when unstable molecules called free radicals are released. Free radicals, now considered key players in many diseases, start to attack the damaged area with indiscriminate zeal, destroying some healthy cells in the process. This new damage leads to yet another round of inflammation.

And that’s where the trouble begins!

This damage to healthy tissue can lead to a vicious cycle of chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation has been linked with heart disease, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, strokes, certain types of cancer and more.

Weight Loss Tips

Health and Wellness - Diet

I have done the research and here is a special quick weight loss tip for you. We all want to lose a bit of weight, and a change in diet and mental attitude towards food can really bring huge benefits in the long term. But what if you are trying to speed up your weight loss process. Perhaps, its a special wedding that you are going to be present at or you are vacationing somewhere and you need your body in top shape before that vacation. ? Don’t worry, this quick weight loss tips that I’m going to be giving you will set you apart from the masses of people that are just failing miserably at losing weight, I just want to make sure that you maintain what I show you here and keeping working on it so that you don’t regain the weight you shed off

Okay, here are the weight loss tips:

You can’t just jump into a vigorous routine though, if you are stretched for time then go for a one hour walk a day, non-stop, no stopping to talk to people along the way and wasting the hour, one hour of solid walking.

If you exercise already then you should climb up to the next intensity level.

Another thing you want to do is to eat breakfast because skipping meals will not help in your weight loss. Not eating breakfast is a big mistake because it will force your body into saving energy since it does not know when it will get it again. When you do eat breakfast however, you are letting your body know that food is available so that it will increase your metabolism as your body will realize that more energy is coming.

Water has numerous health benefits which includes reducing the drive for food, in other words it acts as an appetite suppressant. Getting the most out of water means drinking about 8 glasses a day as this will greatly reduce your drive for food.

Fibre reduces the desire for food just like water so you should also eat a lot of it. Moreover, fibre refreshes your immune system so that you are less bloated and stuffed and it gets rid of old waste in your system to help you feel better, when you feel better you are more likely to exercise! This is a quick weight loss tip that not a lot of people know about.

The problem is snacking on the wrong things. If you try to stop snacking you will more than likely lose the battle with your willpower! You have to replace it so you get the psychological satisfaction of snacking but you are doing it in a healthy way. Try alternate snacks like peanuts and fruit rather than a double chocolate cookie or ice cream.

If you follow these fast weight loss tips you will start to see rapid improvements in your energy levels and your body, keep it up until that event and then moderate it afterwards to make sure the weight stays off! A lot of people are looking for a quick weight loss tip and I believe these tips will get you well on the way to shedding off those pounds.

Weight Loss tips

Health and Wellness - Diet

You’ve likely been on your fair share of diet programs that just did not suit your personality or that just didn’t fit well into your daily habits. While you probably blamed yourself on some level for the failure at those diets, it is important to understand that not every diet or exercise plan is suitable for everyone. If you want to lose weight quickly and really keep it off in the future, you have to follow weight loss tips that blend well into your everyday life.

Just realize right now that an exercise system that demands too much of your free time isn’t going to work for long. Extremely restrictive diets that expect you to stop eating everything you enjoy aren’t going to be permanently successful, either. The best weight loss tips are those that anyone can work into their daily life. If you can find new habits rather than starting yet another fad diet, you are more likely to maintain your weight loss forever. This is the trick to losing the weight and never having to do it again.

Here is one simple weight loss tip that can be adjusted to your lifestyle and personality to help you lose weight quickly.

Get Moving

Exercise is crucial to fat loss, especially if you are trying to lose weight quickly. The more you exercise your body the more calories you will burn off. With an increased calorie burn comes a greater need for energy. As your body demands more energy, it will be more willing to burn stored energy from your fat cells.

Here’s the key: exercise doesn’t have to overwhelm your entire life and it doesn’t have to be so strenuous that you cry every second of it. Many people who lose weight quickly start by initially finding easy ways to move their body more. If you have a bike, get moving and ride or just walk to all destinations that are near your home. Make yourself get up to change channels on the TV by taking the batteries out of the remote. Get out and play with your kids, rather than supervising from the window or porch. Walk laps around your home or jog in place while watching your favorite TV shows.

Don’t let time-consuming weight loss tips stand in your way of making desired change, even if you have to start off slower. As long as you make an effort you will see results…so get going right away!

Weight Loss

Health and Wellness - Diet

Many diets can produce weight loss, but if this is a good weight loss diet is another thing all together. A good diet is one that will help you lose fat, but unfortunately many do that.

Different diets lead to weight loss, but very few actually get rid of fat. Many diets seem in the early stages of work, but then it stops all together, and for good reason.

Basically, all these diets will help you lose fluids, have little advantages when it comes to losing fat, which, if honest, what we all really take off.

Another negative of many low-calorie diet is available, which your body that cause you mistakenly assume are starving themselves. This makes your metabolism store fat, rather than get rid of it and instead burns muscle, which also makes your metabolism working at a slower pace.

The lower metabolic rate means that your calories to burn of slower with little weight loss – unless you're really hungry.

Fat loss diets tend to be weight loss programs, which produce slow weight loss, so you can make a choice between rapid weight loss, which does not get rid of fat or slower weight loss that burns fat..

The only diet that provides a relatively rapid loss of weight and gets rid of fat is about shifting calories, but on a different basis from that which is to decide which is more important to you – get rid of weight quickly or get rid of fat.

Weight Loss Medication

Health and Wellness medications

Weight loss medications and supplements may seem like a new fad, the idea has actually been around for quite some time. Thought to be one of the first methods of weight loss through “diet pills” was the act of ingesting tape worms in order to lose weight, which can be traced back to the 19th and 20th centuries, and became a popular topic in the 1950s. Also, in the 1930s, approximately 100,000 Americans took the chemical dinitrophenol, as it was believed to keep food energy from becoming fat. In actuality it was poisonous and led to blindness and death (New York Times, May 25, 1999).

The late 1950s,saw doctors began prescribing amphetamines to patients. Amphetamines are appetite suppressant that had been used extensively in WWII in order to keep soldiers alert and to keep them from becoming fatigued. Amphetamines stopped being prescribed to patients for weight loss in the 1960s, after they led to dependency and addiction problems.

Starting in the 1970s, the weight loss epidemic began and with it came a variety of new weight loss pills and supplements to the market, many of which were appetite suppressants. As time has passed, and FDA restrictions have become more stringent, we have seen the rise of dietary and herbal supplements for weight loss. Another reason that may account for the rise in the number of diet pills available is the sharp decline in the number of Americans who exercise. Time magazine reported in 1981 that nearly half the population exercised regularly, while a 2002 study done by the National Center for Health Statistics reported that only about 30% of Americans exercise regularly. The decline in exercise among Americans, coupled with the obesity epidemic, has opened the doors for drug and supplement companies to profit off of the growing problem.

Today we face problems such as once FDA approved drugs being pulled from the market due to side effects, as well as other prescription drugs, given for conditions such as epilepsy or ADHD, being used to aid in weight loss.

While Americans continue to abandon diet and exercise for weight loss and instead turn to medications for quick results, we have to wonder whether the potential complications are worth the risk.

Weight Loss

Health and Wellness Weight Loss Tips

You still see a lot of offers for weight loss products based on laxatives online. These offers usually involve a product that cleanses your bowel and promises quick results. Unfortunately, quick results are not the same as lasting results.

The problem is that weight loss by laxatives is never permanent. The reason why is pretty apparent. You lose mainly fluids, not fat. If you want to lose weight, you’re probably looking to lose fat. Losing water is easy, but futile. In a few days you’ll gain it back and you won’t even look better in the period that you’ve lost the water.

If you want to lose weight, focus on losing weight permanently in a natural way. Losing weight with laxatives is focused way too much on the short term and can be harmful.

Vitamin D Deficiency

I've been writing articles regarding Vitamin D and how important it is to your body. As a matter of fact, and according to many health professionals, it helps "promote bone health and ward off diseases like osteoporosis." However, many people are deficient of this all important vitamin.

The statistics are unbelievable when it comes to vitamin D deficiency. According to experts, nearly 80 percent of Americans are deficient in vitamin D. WOW!! Why all the concern? Because this leads to an increased risk for inflammation, heart problems, weak bones, osteoporosis, unhealthy blood pressure levels, decreased immunity and memory loss; not to mention a major strain on our health care system.

As with most of my articles, I try to keep you informed of health risks, and I try to pass along information when I receive it. Today is no exception! Brazos Minshew, Chief Science Officer for TriVita, in his Weekly Wellness Report, explains how to test yourself for vitamin d deficiency, explains the signs of deficiency, reasons for deficiency, and what you can do about it.

I've included the complete article below. Please read this article and make sure you do o become one of the deficiency statistics. There is help, and you can do something about it.

Test Yourself for "D"eficiency by Brazos Minshew

With your thumb, press on your sternum (breastbone). Is it tender or painful? Now, press on the tibia (shin bone) of both your legs. Is it sore or tender? If the answer is "yes" to both of these tests then you have a 93% chance of being Vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D may be the most prevalent vitamin deficiency in our culture. What is Vitamin D and what does it do for us?

Function of Vitamin D
Vitamin D is both a vitamin (vital amine) and a hormone. It acts as a vitamin when it binds with calcium for proper absorption. Humans cannot digest calcium without adequate amounts of Vitamin D.

Vitamin D is a hormone (a messenger inside your body) because it directs cells, organs, muscle and bone in daily activity. It is a hormone because your body creates it in response to sunlight on your skin. It participates in weight loss, the function of your immune system, blood sugar regulation and basic human metabolism.

Humans mobilize essential fatty acids, such as Omega-3, with Vitamin D. In order to properly use calcium and Omega-3 you simply must have enough Vitamin D. Yet, many people don't.

Signs of deficiency
The test above is one way of checking for low levels of Vitamin D. You see, calcium and other minerals are delivered to an area in your bones that is like a gelatin matrix. This gelatin matrix hardens into sturdy bone. Calcium can only arrive in this matrix if it is escorted by Vitamin D. If you are deficient in Vitamin D, this matrix will revert back to gelatin near the surface of the bone. Tenderness and bone pain will result.

This kind of bone pain can be seen in cases of osteomalacia (softening of the bones), as well as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and even the pain associated with chronic depression.

Further, Vitamin D deficiency can result in:

  • Obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
  • Psoriasis

Eventually, Vitamin D deficiency may lead to cancer (especially breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer), osteoporosis and Alzheimer's disease.

Reasons for deficiency
The primary reasons people become deficient in Vitamin D are cultural. For instance, women that wear veils in certain cultures are almost universally deficient in Vitamin D, as are submariners who spend extended time submerged. Neither group spends much time with their skin exposed to direct sunlight. The most common reasons for Vitamin D deficiency in North America also relate to lack of exposure to sunlight and infrequent consumption of cold-water fish. Cold-water fish such as wild salmon, mackerel and sardines are good food sources of Vitamin D - as well as good sources of calcium and Omega-3 fatty acids.

Many foods have been supplemented with Vitamin D, but this has not resulted in an overall increase in Vitamin D levels. This is likely because food and supplement manufacturers rely on an inexpensive form of synthetic Vitamin D called "ergocalciferol" - a form of Vitamin D-2. Food sources of Vitamin D and supplements such as TriVita's Bone Growth Factor, VitaCal-Mag D and Leanology Capsules use Vitamin D-3 (cholecalciferol), which is the same form that your body makes from sunshine.

What to do?
If your bones are tender or if you have a low blood level of Vitamin D the solution may be as simple as increasing your sun exposure. Spend 20 minutes daily in the sunshine with 40% of your skin surface exposed. Morning and evening sunshine is best; afternoon sun is acceptable. Never allow yourself to sunburn.

When supplementing with Vitamin D always choose D-3. It is also good to remember that this is a "fat soluble" vitamin. That means that you can store the nutrient for many days.

I will often suggest two capsules of TriVita's Bone Growth Factor or two tablets of VitaCal-Mag D to be taken at every meal. Test the tenderness in your sternum and shin bones every 6 months. Reduce your supplements to one capsule or tablet per meal when the tenderness has disappeared from the sternum and shin bones.

If Leanology Capsules are a more appropriate source of Vitamin D for you (if you are overweight and otherwise in a low-risk category for osteoporosis), taking two capsules at each meal is a good strategy. However, since most overeating occurs in the evening and since Vitamin D reduces appetite, it may be best to take three to six Leanology capsules all in the evening.

It is good to get a blood test for appropriate blood levels of Vitamin D twice a year and a DEXA scan of your bones at least every two years to help you structure a supplement program.

Eventually, health comes down to healthy habits practiced every day. Every day we should nourish our body and nurture our spirit for sustained health. **END of ARTICLE**

Now I'm not a doctor or even in the health care industry, but I do a lot of research and read a lot of articles. Before committing to any supplementation, always check with your health care professional first. If he/she recommends taking a vitamin D supplement, show him/her TriVita's VitaCal-Mag D, and ask their opinion.

To learn more about TriVita's VitaCal-Mag D, go to the TriVita Products page and click on the Vitamin D link.

Weight Loss

Health and Wellness Weight Loss Tips

Losing weight is the goal of many people in this day and age, more so today than ever before in our history. And the faster the better, if you please. And while you’re at it, do you have an easy weight loss tip? Why, yes, I can honestly say I do.

I will tell you what it is if you only you will use it. Not just for today, but until you are able to step on the scale, or look in the mirror and feel good about what you see.

We live in the age of instant gratification. The E-factor many marketers call it: E for expedient. And I’m not sure how all of this started, lack of information, maybe. Lack of awareness, perhaps. So let’s stop there.

Awareness.

You want your easy weight loss tip? There it is, become more aware. Self-sabotage is the number one culprit that blocks would be diet successes and turns them into sure-fire failures. We don’t pay attention, not enough anyway.

We derail our own efforts when we take our hands off the wheel of our lives, so to speak. The secret to your weight loss success is to pay more attention to things you do, say, and think. Yes, the things you think. Fears, frets, worries, something comes out of nowhere, a crisis of some kind, a distraction of some sort and suddenly, without notice, your new diet is in your life’s rear view mirror.

Focus is awareness. Being conscientious of all surroundings is awareness. Devoting a short amount of time everyday, in complete silence, breeds further awareness. But here is the easy weight loss tip. Go out and get a pad from the store and buy a pen that feels comfortable in your hand.

Then every morning get up one half hour earlier than you presently do, and write in that pad. Write down your weight loss goals, and how you plan to achieve them. It doesn’t matter if you do anything after your done writing. The only thing that matters is that you do the same thing everyday, without fail.

Write down your weight loss goals and how you plan to achieve them. Do it tomorrow. Do it the next day. Do it on weekends. Do it on holidays. Do not skip doing this one easy weight loss tip.

Because at some point, at some keen moment, at some secret time, not too far after you make a commitment to begin this process you will be compelled to take the very actions you’ve been writing about.

It doesn’t get any easier than that.

Weight loss Motivation

Health and Wellness Weight Loss Tips

There are many weight loss tips circulating around the Internet, everything from an increased consumption of protein and fiber to 60 minutes of cardio every day. Although these tips may be promising and effective in the long run, there is a single tip that’s even more important. In this article I will reveal this valuable weight loss step and discuss how you can master it without failure.

Believe it or not, the most important weight loss tips are not healthy nutrition and it is not exercise, its motivation. Without motivation weight loss is impossible. This is what makes this concept the key ingredient to great results.

The reason why motivation is the key to success is because it’s also our main reason behind failure. Believe it or not, many of us start a weight loss plan but never follow though with it due to a lack of motivation. We tell ourselves that we have tried this so many times before, what will make this time any different. We also tend to overwhelm ourselves. Creating schedules that are nearly impossible to keep up with and adjust to. However, if you have the proper willpower you can overcome this obstacle.

All you need to do is ease into weight loss slowly and carefully. Make small changes at first and don’t have your expectations too high. For instance, instead of going to the gym 6 days a week on your first week, try going twice. When we take on too much we lose the sense of control that we once had over our weight loss plans.

Chronic Hunger and Weight Loss

Millions of people worldwide look to diet and/or lose weight every year. However, on the flip side there are millions of men, women, and children suffering from a lack of food, or starvation. How is it that people can spend thousands of dollars on weight loss programs, to lose the unwanted pounds, all the while these people are literally starving to death?

My friends at the Help End Hunger Now Foundation, in their weekly hunger report, explain chronic hunger and the affects it has on the masses that are suffering from it throughout the world. The Help End Hunger Foundation is an organization founded on the principles of ending this chronic hunger crisis, while at the same time, promoting healthier and more nutritious eating habits.

Below is the complete article explaining what many people are facing and serious facts about chronic hunger. If you're looking to lose weight or looking for a weight loss program, because of your bad eating habits, I pray that you will take to heart the information in the article, and take action to not only help yourself, but to help the many people that need help now.

Chronic Hunger by The Help End Hunger Now Foundation

What Causes Chronic Hunger?
You may be surprised to learn that it has little to do with food shortages. Global supplies of food far outstrip demand. Chronic hunger affects more than 800 million people in the world and it is, in and of itself, a potentially deadly condition.

The Effects of Chronic Hunger
Chronic hunger -- or food insecurity -- is as devastating to families, communities, and countries as is famine. Chronic hunger claims more victims than famine each year -- by far.

Effects of chronic hunger include:
High Infant-Mortality Rates. Malnourished women are more likely to be sick, have smaller babies, and die earlier, resulting in high levels of infant mortality in areas where chronic hunger is a problem. And where infant and child mortality is high, birth rates are also high, locking these communities in a vicious cycle of malnutrition and death. Vulnerability to Common Illnesses. More than two million children die every year from dehydration caused by diarrhea. A malnourished child often lacks the strength to survive a severe case of diarrhea.

Increased Risk of Infection.
A malnourished child has a weakened immune system, making the child more vulnerable to infection. Infections cause lack of appetite and further compromise the child's ability to fight off recurrent and lingering infections. Impediments to Development. Chronic hunger deprives children of the essential proteins, micronutrients and fatty acids they need to grow adequately. Globally, it is estimated that nearly 226 million children are stunted -- shorter than they should be. In addition, stunted children score significantly lower on intelligence tests than do normal children.

Impediments to Economic Growth.
For the nearly 67 million children who weigh less than they should due to chronic hunger, completing school is an unlikely reality. Studies have shown that underweight children will probably spend fewer years in school, which, in turn, has a measurable impact on how much they earn in adulthood. ***END of ARTICLE***

Some reports state that there are approximately 50 million Americans who go on a diets each year - yet only 5 percent keep the weight they lose off. Many people trying to lose weight continually struggle to find an effective weight loss method, yet millions of people are starving to death. Why? Awareness!

I would have to believe that most people do not know what's happening around the world, let alone in their own neighborhood. And I believe it all starts with awareness. Being aware of the problems facing, not only, our neighborhood and/or nation, but other countries around the world is the first step towards ending the world hunger problem, not to mention obesity.

If you're looking to lose weight, or looking for a weight loss program try TriVita's Leanology. If you'd like to lose weight and help end hunger around the world at the same time, contact the Help End Hunger Now Foundation.

I hope this article has increased awareness within your heart to the challenges of the world. If it has, I now challenge you to take action, and do something about it. Remember, awareness has to precede action; once we are aware of the problem, we can then take action. I hope you accept this challenge, so we can End Hunger Now!

Inflammation Hot Spots

When most people hear the word 'inflammation' they think of the swelling and redness that accompanies an injury such as a sprained ankle. However, inflammation can also be systemic and caused not by injury but by lack of exercise and a poor diet. Systemic inflammation increases the risk of cancer, hypertension, heart disease, gastrointestinal problems, and many other health conditions. In fact, many anti-aging professionals believe that inflammation is the greatest cause of premature aging, so preventing it is also vital for looking young. Taking on an exercise program is one key to decreasing systemic inflammation, and the other key is to consume a diet that does not promote inflammation.

One form of systemic inflammation is MTHFR. "Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is the name of a gene that produces an enzyme, also called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. If a person carries the genetic mutation that inhibits production of this enzyme, it can result in hyperhomocytenemia, which is an elevated level of an enzyme called homocysteine found in blood plasma."[1]

TriVita's Chief Science Officer, Brazos Minshew, takes a look at MTHFR and inflammation in this week's Wellness Report. The complete article is listed below.

Inflammation Hot Spots, by Brazos Minshew

The process of inflammation starts with injury, toxicity, deficiency or emotional distress. One particular deficiency that causes inflammation is a genetic deficiency called MTHFR. This deficiency is relatively common - perhaps the most common genetic deficiency in North America. It is related to the way we manufacture proteins. A sign that we have MTHFR deficiency is elevated homocysteine.

MTHFR deficiency creates pools of homocysteine that ignite inflammation like bonfires in specific tissues of your body. The strategies for reducing this inflammation depend greatly on where the bonfire starts. And, like many forest fires, inflammation often features multiple fronts that require different strategies for quelling its flames.

Burning brain
The delicate tissues of the brain are common victims of inflammation from an MTHFR deficiency. Elevated homocysteine feeds the fire that melts fragile neurons. Movement disorders like Parkinson's disease and dementias such as Alzheimer's disease are associated with elevated homocysteine. Further, inflammation in the brain associated with MTHFR and elevated homocysteine are also implicated in autism, ADD/ADHD, bipolar depression and schizophrenia.

MTHFR deficiency is addressed by increasing folates in the diet. Folates describe a B vitamin from foliage - leafy green vegetables. Actually, all fruits and vegetables contain some folate. Eating the optimum amount of folate can go a long way to filling the deficiency associated with MTHFR and elevated homocysteine. Remember, the optimum number of servings for fruits and vegetables is:

  • 5 servings for children
  • 7 servings for women
  • 9 servings for men

Make sure you eat vegetables of every color - eat a rainbow!

Supplements such as HCY Guard® provide nutrients that help "re-methylate" homocysteine in the presence of this MTHFR deficiency. Inflammation is normalized by the anti-inflammatory Betalains found in Nopalea™. Essential fatty acids and EFA supplements such as OmegaPrime® serve as primary building blocks for a healthy brain. Also, Omega-3 EFA, Betalains and ECGC polyphenols in Energy Now!® serve to help the body protect DNA strands and create stem cells that are needed to repair delicate, fragile brain tissues.

Burning bones
Bones are living tissue. Osteoblast cells lay down a matrix of collagen proteins and build minerals around it. Collagen provides tensile strength for the bones and minerals provide compression strength for the bones. Homocysteine shatters this matrix and melts the collagen in your bones (and elsewhere), resulting in brittle bones. Further, without collagen, minerals cannot form and the bones become porous. The end result is often osteoporosis.

Folates and plant hormones such as Vitamin K found in leafy green vegetables help reduce the impact of MTHFR deficiency and increase the opportunity for osteoblasts to make healthy bone. Healthy bones also require significant amounts of Vitamin D. Sunshine is the best source of Vitamin D; however, in North America it is not always possible to get enough healthy sun exposure to meet our Vitamin D needs. Supplements such as Bone Growth Factor and VitaCal-Mag D can help give us the nutrients we need for healthy bones. HCY Guard can help the body reduce inflammatory homocysteine and Betalains from Nopalea can help reduce the impact of inflammation.

Burning blood
MTHFR deficiency was discovered when scientists began searching for the reasons why heart disease and stroke seemed to cluster in certain families. It was discovered that these families shared a genetic deficiency that required far more folate than their diet provided. Folate deficiency depletes Vitamin B-12 and compounds the homocysteine problem. Homocysteine ignites LDL ("bad") cholesterol in the bloodstream and creates the inflammation at the root of cardiovascular disease, heart attacks and stroke.

A high folate diet focusing on leafy green vegetables can fill this deficiency. Supplements such as HCY Guard, Nopalea and OmegaPrime can help the body ease' the fire in the delicate tissues lining the blood vessels. According to the VISP study (Vitamin Intervention for Stroke Prevention) this comprehensive strategy can fill the deficiency created by MTHFR, put out the fire fueled by homocysteine, and reduce the likelihood of heart attack and stroke.

Conclusion
Inflammation hot spots build fires around your body in places like your brain, your bones and your heart.

  1. A high folate diet can fill the deficiency that causes these body bonfires.
  2. Safe daily sun exposure along with exercise and peaceful sleep can help build a solid foundation for wellness.
  3. Appropriate supplementation can help satisfy the needs created by MTHFR while putting out the fires of inflammation and creating vigorous cells for health today and a healthier tomorrow.

Vitamin B12

Are you suffering from vitamin B12 deficiency? If so, you should start taking some sort of supplement to get your b12 levels back to a healthy and normal level. Many individuals, at the request of their doctors, turn to vitamin b12 shots. However, an alternative supplement can come in the form of sublingual vitamin B12. Many patients recommend this type of supplement because the effects are very noticeable and the benefits are quick.

In the late 1970s, Dr. Alfred Libby, renowned authority on therapeutic nutrition and longtime associate of Nobel Prize Laureate, Dr. Linus Pauling, began to explore an alternative delivery system for Vitamin B-12. The goal was to bypass the stomach where this essential nutrient is delivered into the bloodstream, but not easily absorbed.

In early spring of 1980, Dr. Libby approached his colleagues with his new theory that B-12 could be delivered to the bloodstream sublingually (under the tongue). Biochemists and his medical colleagues were quick to dismiss the idea. However, he was persistent and they eventually decided to give his theory a try, although they were convinced it would fail.

Six weeks later the first study was underway. Shortly after, Dr. Libby's Sublingual B-12 invention was deemed a complete success-blood levels of B-12 increased dramatically.

Many people have found success with Dr. Libby's patented sublingual vitamin b12. It is the number one selling product which is sold and distributed by TriVita.

With Dr. Libby's sublingual b12, all you have to do is place the pill underneath the tongue and leave it there until it's completely dissolved. Sublingual delivery causes the vitamin B12 to be quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. The results appear quicker than the conventional way, swallowing a pill and letting it go through your digestive system.

B12 supplements taken orally and absorbed through the digestive system usually takes hours to enter your system. However, as mentioned previously, that's not the case with the sublingual delivery system. Furthermore, as we age, our digestive systems have a harder time absorbing vitamin b12, which can lead to a b12 deficiency.

Why is vitamin b12 so important, and a deficiency so detrimental to our health?

Vitamin B-12 is an essential nutrient because we cannot thrive without it. We need Vitamin B-12 to make healthy blood, healthy nerves and a healthy brain. Vitamin B-12 insufficiency is implicated in a number of common conditions: from allergies and ADHD to bipolar disorder and Alzheimer's disease. Along with iron and Vitamin C, Vitamin B-12 is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies among seniors. You may actually be protected from a shrinking brain with healthy levels of Vitamin B-12.

Even with all the positive benefits listed above, I have not mentioned one of its main benefits, that it provides increased energy levels. Many individuals will tell you that they feel more energized shortly after taking a sublingual supplement.

Vitamin b12 is very important, and a deficiency can be detrimental to your health. So, if you're suffering from vitamin b12 deficiency, or you think you are, make an appointment to visit your doctor. If he concurs that you are b12 deficient, ask him if sublingual b12 supplementation is a viable option. If so, go to TriVita's Product page, and check out Sublingual B12.

Omega-3 fatty Acids

Australian scientists believe they have figured out why diets that are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids have an Alzheimer's-proofing effect on the brain.

In a recent study at Melbourne's Deakin University, researchers "have found its (Omega-3 fatty acids) protective powers stem from an ability to regulate the brain's natural level of zinc, which can prove toxic at elevated levels."[1]

Typically, Omega-3 fatty acids can be obtained from eating fish like salmon, cod liver, herring, and mackerel, or by taking a supplement. However, it's the later where many people turn when it comes to omega-3. Why? Because many people believe that the consumption of certain fish can be toxic, especially when consumed in large amounts.

Even though the researchers from Deakin University did not suggest how you should introduce omega-3 fatty acids into your diet, they did say, "we believe that having omega-3 fatty acids in the diet helps keep the levels of zinc in the brain in balance and helps prevents the increase in levels that triggers cell death."[1]

I guess the "how" is left up to the individual. Personally, I take TriVita's Omega Prime, because it's created from the highest grade of fish oil, and uses only contaminant-free fish oil that has undergone a 10 stage distilling process. So, if you're afraid about fish contamination, do not fear. You can be assured that Omega Prime is free of all contamination.

Facts about Alzheimer's disease
As many as 5.3 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal. Today it is the seventh-leading cause of death in the United States. Alzheimer's disease also accounts for 50 to 70 percent of all dementia cases. (Facts courtesy of the Alzheimer's web site).[2]

If it's true what the researchers found during their study, that "a reduced incidence of neurodegenerative diseases in populations with a diet rich omega-3 fatty acids", then introducing omega-3 fatty acids into your diet is a must.

I've written many articles telling about the importance of omega-3 fatty acids, and having it as part of your diet. And now it's even becoming more prevalent, as to the reason why. The results of more and more studies are surfacing, and diets, typical of modern America - ones high in omega-6 fatty acids and low in omega-3s - are linked to higher risks of cancer, diabetes, immunity disorders, and now dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Help protect your body from these horrible diseases, by adding omega-3 fatty acids to your diet. To learn more about the information listed in this article, copy and paste the links below into your web browser, or go to the TriVita Products site.

Nutritional Supplements and Stress

Are you stressed out? According to research, stress is caused by many different things, and can lead to many different types of illnesses and diseases. However, the best way fight stress is by "identifying the sources of stress in your life and finding ways to avoid them or reduce their impact." Sounds so simple, yet it may not be that easy!

Since many of us are thrust into stressful situations on a daily basis, we must either learn how to deal with stress, or find a means where it does not permanently affect our health.

According to the American Institute of Stress (AIS), "Some people find that listening to music, hobbies, volunteer work, keeping a daily journal of events and how they feel, laughter, playing with pets, taking short breaks or shopping help them to relax. Others find relief for their stress related symptoms from aromatherapy, nutritional supplements like chamomile, spearmint, kava kava, adaptogens and St. John's wort or even sitting under a pyramid." [1]

Since it's not always possible to avoid stressful situations, I prefer taking daily nutritional supplements, especially ones that protect the body from the damage that stress can cause. The Chief Science Officer of TriVita, Brazos Minshew, in his daily wellness report, wrote an article called "Stress and Your Health." I posted the entire article below so you can see how stress can affect your health.

Stress and Your Health by Brazos Minshew

There are four common causes of imbalance that affect our health:

  • Trauma
  • Toxins
  • Deficiency
  • Emotional distress

Stress triggers a flood of hormones that sacrifice healthy organs in order to solve the stress crisis. Chronic stress causes us to wear out and age prematurely.

According to the book, "Who Gets Sick?" stress is reducing the quality and quantity of life of most people in North America - including you! It strangles the joy and pleasure from your days and nights. It makes you miserable, and then it makes you sick. You become susceptible to diseases such as heart attacks, cancer and diabetes. Once you are sick, stress keeps you from responding as well to medical care. Yes, stress is a killer!

Know your enemy!
Stress is short for distress. Distress describes an unpleasant influence by forces outside or even inside your body trying to tear you apart; it can come from your environment, your body or even your thoughts.

Stress triggers the fight or flight mechanism. Your body will prioritize resources to meet specific demands of stress. In fight or flight, your body prepares to do battle or run away. Either of these actions will require fuel - and right now!

Where do you get that fuel? From organs you don't need at that moment to survive.

So, if you are being chased by a lion, you don't need digestion. Stress will take nutrients from digestion as fuel to meet this particular crisis. The same is true for other organs and systems: Stress will literally rob nutrients from your reproductive system, your bones, and aspects of your immune system, your nervous system and more - all in an attempt to survive.

Now, assuming you survive the stress, are the nutrients returned to those systems? No, not at first. They are taken out quickly and returned slowly, just in case there is another lion around.

Gradually, you begin to show signs of chronic stress that we call premature aging: your blood sugar becomes more difficult to control; your arteries begin to clog up with cholesterol; and your muscle and bone mass begins to melt away. Then, enzymes in your cells begin to turn off and caramelized sugars begin to damage your brain and nerves. You can't think and you have no energy. Your body cannot stand that kind of stress and it breaks down.

Fighting back
This illustrates why we need nutrients from food and supplements to combat stress. The more nutrients we have "on board," the less fuel your body will have to rob during a crisis.

The opposite of stress is homeostasis. So, while stress is constantly trying to pull you apart, homeostasis is constantly working to put you back together. Homeostasis is the priority process your body uses to combat stress. It requires nutrients to function. So, a key strategy for helping reduce the impact of stress is to take Healthy Aging nutrients (including a robust supply of Sublingual B-12) every day.

Rather than being just an isolated event, stress accumulates over time. A single stressful event can affect you for up to two years or more. Therefore homeostasis must be constant, relentless and dynamic in working to return you to a normal state. It must do this no matter which direction stress is pulling you.

Homeostasis is a very important process in our body and we need to support it in every way we can. Homeostasis encompasses all of our resources: our brain and nervous system, our immune system, our hormonal system and every other body function. Adaptogens support homeostasis in all body systems. Adaptogens are "non-specific" in that they help your body reclaim balance. Adaptogens are non-toxic at any level, so you can feel free to take an added serving of Adaptogen 10 Plus as needed in order to break the cycle of stress. A daily serving of adaptogens can help keep you calm and relaxed.

A specific target of stress is the thyroid gland. Specific proteins found in Energy Now! support healthy thyroid function when stress creates thyroid imbalance.

Healthy Aging nutrients along with Adaptogen 10 Plus and Energy Now! can help protect against the relentless stress we all face. We need nutrients and nurturing; these lifesaving resources are found in the 10 Essentials for Health and Wellness. Learn them and live them, and you will be able to resist the relentless killer: stress! ***END of ARTICLE***

Vitamin D

It's a known fact that vitamin D is an essential nutrient. Doctors from all around the world have concluded that vitamin D essential to promote healthy heart and brain function, relieve pain and inflammation, support strong bones, and also boost your mood. Researchers have also discovered that there's a link between vitamin D deficiency and bone loss in patients with HIV.

I believe the list will continue to grow, as more and more research is done on this all important nutrient. No matter what your situation is, it's important to make sure you're getting the proper daily amount of vitamin D from the best source available, like TriVita's VitaCal-Mag D.

The statistics are staggering when it comes to vitamin D deficiency. According to experts, nearly 80 percent of Americans are deficient in vitamin D. To me, that's just unbelievable! Why all the concern, because this leads to an increased risk for inflammation, heart problems, weak bones, unhealthy blood pressure levels, decreased immunity and memory loss; not to mention a major strain on our health care system.

If that news isn't bad enough, there are additional studies indicating a greater risk for abnormal cell growth in patients who are deficient in the sunshine vitamin. [1] In fact, during some of the studies conducted it's been found that up to 50 percent of subjects analyzed that were vitamin D deficient also suffered from serious health problems.

It's possible that you think you're getting enough vitamin D by eating foods "enriched" or "fortified" with vitamin D. However, foods like milk, cereal, margarine, pudding, and vitamin drinks may not be supplying you with enough of a daily dose. Even though these previously mentioned foods do have "some" source of vitamin D you may not be getting the right kind of vitamin D.

As mentioned previously, the proper vitamin D is needed to help fight inflammation and protect every cell in your body. And the vitamin D you get from sunshine could be your most effective weapon for maintaining a healthy body. But now the bad news; as you age (yes, get older), your body may no longer be able to efficiently produce adequate levels of Vitamin D from exposure to sunlight alone. It may be time to commit to taking a daily supplement of vitamin D.

What supplement should you take, and how much vitamin D is needed? Well, a lot of experts recommend an absolute minimum of 1,000 IU of vitamin D per day. And I've seen some articles that suggest taking up to six times that much for individuals over 50. So, that would relate to between 4,000 and 6,000 IU per day. Even the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves supplementation of up to 2,000 IU of vitamin D a day.

To learn more about TriVita's VitaCal-Mag D, go to the TriVita Products site and click on the Vitamin D link.
